Trademark ‘Jose Mourinho’ owned by Chelsea Football Club

Manchester United announced on their website  that they signed a contract with the Portuguese trainer Jose Mourinho until 2020.

However, the press release withheld the fact that the trademark ‘Jose Mourinho’ is actually owned by FC Chelsea. The search on ‘Jose Mourinho’ returns as many as four trademarks, all registered in similar classes. The longest of these is not due for renewal before the year 2025.

Experts speculate on the possible courses of action in a situation like this. One possible solution would be obtaining the licence or seeking trademark assignment from Chelsea. Other options include ManU seeking invalidation of the trademark, or attempting to prove non-use of the trademark by Chelsea.
